Spring 2022 update

Spring is a great time to be in Whistler and the Sea to Sky Corridor! The days are getting longer and warmer weather is melting the snow in the valley. We can now start enjoying activities such as biking and golfing while still able to ski and ride on the mountain well into May.  Whistler Mountain is scheduled to close winter operations on April 18, 2022 and Blackcomb will remain open until May 23, 2022.

As of March 5, 2022, the hours of operation have been extended so the lifts open at 8.30am and now close at 4pm daily.  From April 19 to May 23, the hours of operation will be from 10am till 4pm.

Creekside Gondola expansion
Whistler Blackcomb’s popular Creekside area is getting a lift upgrade for the 2022/2023 Winter Season. It is planned to replace the existing six person Gondola with a new highspeed, eight person Gondola. The new gondola is meant to improve wait times as well as increase capacity by 35 percent. The Big Red Express is going to be replaced with a six-person chair.

Interest Rates:
As widely expected, the Bank of Canada raised its overnight policy rate on March 2, 2022 to 0.5 per cent, an increase of 25 basis points. In the statement accompanying the decision the Bank noted that the invasion of Ukraine by Russia has added a major new source of uncertainty to the global economy, and it expects the fallout to include upward pressure on inflation and possible supply disruptions. However, economic growth in Canada finished 2021 stronger than expected.

Historically, Bank of Canada tightening has led to falling home sales and flattening home prices.  But with the real estate markets so out-of-balance, it will take a substantial decline in demand to return active listings to a more normal level and have a significant impact on prices.

Transit strike
As of January 29, the Whistler Transit Ltd and Diversified Transit, went on strike suspending public transportation services in the Whistler, Squamish, and Pemberton Valley areas. At this time, BC Transit is not certain about how long the service disruption will last.

There are two taxi companies and a rideshare company in Whistler operating 24 hours a day. With vehicles ranging from mini vans to full-sized sedans, Whistler’s taxi cabs and rideshares make it easy to bring your ski, snowboard or golf gear. Taxis can be booked for trips to and from Vancouver International Airport and neighboring towns.
